Route 5 was closed by the North End Bridge in West Springfield Monday for emergency road repairs.
Police said several cars had flat tires from hitting potholes on the north and southbound sides of the roadway Monday morning. Around 10:30 a.m., all traffic was diverted off the state road onto the rotary.
Workers at Town Fair Tire in West Springfield said they had seen at least a dozen customers Monday requiring new tires because of potholes.
Michael Verseckes from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said the large swing in temperatures coupled with recent precipitation led to the poor road conditions all over the state. He said the potholes usually don't start showing up until spring.
Verseckes said the state was not liable for damage done to vehicles by driving over potholes except in rare occasions. He said the pothole had to be attributed as the sole cause of a crash that resulted in death or serious injury.
Route 5 was reopened at about 3 p.m. Monday.
