A dating website is trying a new form of advertising you might not believe.
Sugardaddie.com is trying to buy a city, or at least its name, and its latest target is Sugar Hill. It's offering $3.7-million to rename the town of 18,000 Sugardaddie.com.
The dating site aimed at older, upscale men looking to find younger women is looking to literally and figuratively put itself on the map.
Website spokesman Darrell Shuster said the reason they set their sights on Sugar Hill is obvious.
"Initial reason is we like the name Sugar Hill, of course. It matches with our name Sugar Daddie and we thought we could have a bit of fun with that," said Shuster.
Fun, but also to gain a big advantage when it comes to promoting itself, all while giving Sugar Hill a lot of extra money for even more additions to go along with its brand new city hall.
"It seems to me they are looking to spend money to enhance image and increase their profile throughout the state of Georgia, so I think this money could go a long way in that regard," said Shuster.
But some city council members don't quite see it that way, especially after seeing the fake transformation put together by sugardaddie.com.
"Yea it's pretty ridiculous," said councilman Steve Edwards.
Edwards said he thought it was candy at first, but when he found out it was a dating website; he was against it even more.
"The name sugardaddie.com goes against everything we've been trying to build here in Sugar Hill, which is a family city," said Edwards.
To add more fuel to the fire, Sugardaddie.com's proposal also includes the addition of a Hugh Hefner statue; someone Shuster said is sort of the ultimate sugar daddy.
"The idea of a statue of Hugh Hefner in this area, a deeply conservative, family-rooted, religious community, just would not work, said councilman Mike Sullivan.
Some Sugar Hill residents were shocked at the idea.
"I love this little town and I surely don't want to give up our name. Hope it doesn't happen," said Kathy Reen.
Even though some of the councilmen said there's no way it will happen, representatives from Sugardaddie.com will be in Sugar Hill on Thursday morning to counter offer with several million dollars more.
