JACKSON, MS (AP) -
A new law in the mostobese state in the nation says Mississippi cities and counties can't ban theBig Gulp or put other local regulations on food and drink.
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed the billon Monday, and it became law immediately.
Bryant, who is a runner, says it's up toindividuals -- not the government -- to make responsible choices abouthealthful living.
Some legislators called it an"anti-Bloomberg" bill. That's a jab at New York Mayor MichaelBloomberg, who tried to ban the sale of super-sized soft drinks. A New Yorkjudge blocked the city's effort last week.
Bloomberg has called the Mississippi bill"ridiculous."
The Mississippi law says local governmentscan't require restaurants to list calorie counts on menus or ban plastic toysin kids' meals.
