Most men say they would rather their wives work part-time, or not at all. According to a new study by the Pew Research Center, 37 percent of fathers believe mothers shouldn't work outside the home at all while 41 percent say part-time work for women is a healthy compromise.
However, a growing number of women disagree. Thirty-seven percent of women say they want to work full-time, which is significantly higher than the 21 percent of women who felt the same in 2007.
Today, 50 percent of women want part-time work compared to 60 percent in 2007.
And only 11 percent prefer to stay at home compared to 19 percent in 2007.
The national poll says the shift toward full-time work has more to do with women wanting to help their families survive the current economy and less to do with women actually wanting a career.
Most moms in the poll also felt confident as parents. Nearly 75 percent of mothers with children under 18 said they were doing an excellent or very good job raising their children.
Fathers were asked that question, too, and 64 percent said the same.
The poll surveyed 2,511 adults. It was conducted during the national debate on women in the workplace ignited by top Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, who writes in a new book about the need for women to be more professionally aggressive.
