ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Thursday was "Cannabis Awareness Day" at the Georgia State Capitol.
Supporters of decriminalizing marijuana gathered on the steps of the state house to draw attention to the issue.
Pot advocates claim Georgia has spent billions of tax dollars attempting to enforce laws against cannabis that haven't worked.
Supporters told CBS Atlanta News spending that amount of money is a waste of tax payer dollars.
"It takes away critical resources that could be used for infrastructure, education, job creation, things that would actually change our communities for the better," said Diane Goldstein of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.
The group estimates that 1 million Georgians use marijuana.
CBS Atlanta News' Craig Bell will have more at 6 p.m.
