Atlanta family says smoke detectors helped avert tragedy during house fire

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A family of three in southwest Atlanta was able to escape their home safely after the upstairs of their house caught on fire around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. A father, mother, and their 19-year-old daughter were all asleep when the flames broke out, and set off a smoke detector alarm in the house.

They said they'd just changed the batteries in their smoke detectors a few days earlier.

"We're just happy we all got out of the house safely, it could have really been tragic," said Brian Winbush.

His daughter was sound asleep when the fire broke out in her room.

"I didn't even smell anything, I didn't hear the smoke detectors myself," said Brittney Winbush. "By the time I got up, my dad was coming in my room and getting me, I didn't even wake up."

She suffered minor burns on her right foot, but otherwise she and her parents were unharmed while escaping the fire.

A Fulton County fire crew was able to contain the blaze to the upper floor. The Winbush family said they will stay with a friend while they find out from their insurance company if the home can be salvaged.

Investigators think the fire may have been started by a space heater.
