Class was in session at Grady High School Tuesday night, but parents were the ones who got the education.
"There are only 10 states in the country that require 17-year-olds be prosecuted as adults and Georgia is one of those 10 states," said J. Tom Morgan, a former DeKalb County district attorney, who now works as a defense attorney.
Morgan spoke to parents about the dangers and consequences of teenagers making poor decisions with ignorance of the law.
"Possession of that gun in the privacy of your own home is no crime, but possession of that gun on school grounds is a felony," Morgan said.
The meeting happened just two weeks after police said Morgan Tukes, a Grady student, brought a stolen gun to school and accidentally shot herself.
"There are all these nuances that he is pointing out to us that we aren't aware of a lot of them," said Marylynn Realff, a parent.
"I think it has a big impact on parents so they can start the dialog with the students. This way the parents can start talking about some very sensitive subjects," Morgan said.
Grady's Parent Teacher Student Association, or PTSA, scheduled Morgan prior to the gun incident, but the group's president said his appearance came at the right time.
"Laws change and some of the laws parents grew up under are so antiquated that we still think its OK to do certain things. Morgan is an excellent instructor and teacher as far as helping us parents understand what is going on," said Earl Cooper, the president of Grady's PTSA.
Cooper said Morgan is expected back at the school to talk to students within a couple of weeks.
