Six new DeKalb County School Board members were sworn in Wednesday after Gov. Nathan Deal made the announcement on his choices earlier in the day.
The new board members are: John Coleman (District 1), Michael Erwin (District 3), David Campbell (District 5), Joyce Morley (District 7), Karen Carter (District 8), and Thaddeus Mayfield (District 9).
The governor used a 2011 law to remove six of DeKalb County's nine school board members after the district was put on probation by its accrediting agency because of alleged mismanagement and infighting on the school board.
The three remaining school members are the ones most recently elected to office.
"I tasked the nominating panel with finding excellent board members who will put the school system back on track toward full accreditation, and the panel performed a Herculean task with a quick turnaround so that the board could get back to work on behalf of the county's students as soon as possible," Deal said. "We had many outstanding community leaders offer themselves for service, and the high caliber of the candidates reflects well on the county. I faced an enviable problem: It was difficult to choose between so many great applicants. I truly believe that the board members will do an incredible job for DeKalb County. The volunteers who served on the nominating panel and as my liaisons to the county school leaders have given of themselves, and they have made a tremendous difference. I cannot thank them enough for their service."
Earlier this week, the governor publicly named the 63 people from a field of 400 who were being interviewed by a panel the governor chose to find replacements. Among those on the short list were former state School Superintendent Werner Rogers, former State Rep. Doug Teper and Kathleen Mathers, the former head of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement. Mathers' led the analysis that revealed recent widespread cheating in Atlanta Public Schools.
