Henry County residents sign petition for traffic light at intersection

HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA GA) -

CBS Atlanta News responded to a serious concern facing some Henry County residents.

Locust Grove resident Barry May said State Route 42 at Locust Road and Jackson Street is more than just a speedway. To him, it's a death trap.

"This is not a video game. We can't have a wreck and start over again," May said.

May said there have been dozens of serious accidents here during the past 13 years and he has documentation from the state to back it up.

"Seventy-three since the year 2000… that's too many, too many," May said.

One of those accidents involved Joanna Lawrence, just moments after she picked her children up from a nearby school a couple of weeks ago.

"Oh it was terrifying, I had three, middle school students with me and we were all shaken up. The lady that rear ended me had children with her. It was very scary," Lawrence said.

May started an online petition to encourage transportation officials to install a traffic light at this intersection.

"As of today we have 535 signatures and I think that's enough to raise the attention and say this needs to be addressed," May said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation officials told CBS Atlanta News Monday they will be conducting a traffic count and study the intersection in the next two weeks to determine what needs to be done to ensure the safety of all drivers.
