The Kennesaw State University student critically injured in a hit-and-run was transferred to the Shepherd Rehabilitation Center on Friday.
For three weeks, Emily Bowman was at Athens Regional Medical Center. She was transferred to the Shepherd Center that specializes in brain injuries.
"We're just excited about the next step in Emily's recovery," said Emily Bowman's father, Dale Bowman.
Officers said Emily Bowman, 19, was walking in the grass along Athens Road when a drunk driver hit her and drove off. A judge signed arrest warrants for William Wilson Heaton Jr., 22, this week. He turned himself in on Wednesday. He made his first appearance in court on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, Dale Bowman said doctors told him his daughter came out of her coma.
"Her eyes started moving around a little bit more and maybe paying attention to the TV," said Dale Bowman.
Dr. Gerald Bilsky will be Emily Bowman's physician at the Shepherd Center. He said they will do their own tests and assessments. He said Bowman had just arrived and they had yet to start.
"We're on a journey here. This is a long process," said Bilsky.
"I am just really excited to be here with Emily," said Dale Bowman.
A fund has been set up to help the Bowman family pay for the medical bills. It is "Emily Taylor Bowman's Medical Bill Fund" at Wells Fargo bank.
As of Friday night, Heaton remained in jail awaiting an ankle monitoring device, a condition of his bond.
