Authorities search for man they say tried to kidnap teen

DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Douglas County sheriff's officials said they're looking for a man who tried to kidnap a 14-year-old boy while he was walking in his neighborhood on Wednesday evening.

Dale Kelley, an investigator, said the boy had been walking along Greythorne Commons, just off of Highway 92 around 5:45 p.m. when a man driving an older red Ford Explorer drove up next to him and asked him if he wanted a puppy. Kelley said that even after the boy told him, "no," the man kept following him and asked him again, in a more aggressive tone.

"If there was a prowler out there, he needs to be identified and captured," Kelley said. "The young man says he never heard or saw a puppy in a vehicle."

Kelley said the teen then did exactly what he should have done - he ran to a home nearby to try to get help.

The boy ran to Sherry Adams' house nearby.

"The look in his eyes - this really scared him. He just took off running, he ran past the other houses and ended up at the door and was banging on the door I mean, just petrified," Adams said. "We just hurried up and let him in the house and he just began shouting, 'I was almost kidnapped! I was almost kidnapped!' It was really just a scary experience."

Adams said she was glad that she was home to help the boy, and hopes neighboring homes and schools will be on alert.

"It's that afternoon hour," Adams said. "I think that's when predators know. They know that a lot of parents are in transit or coming home and a lot of these kids are left by themselves or walking by themselves. That's the predator hour, I really believe that."
