One by one Georgia Power rolled out 228 workers to Washington, DC, on Tuesday to assist power crews with likely outages from an approaching winter storm that has dumped several feet of snow across the Midwest.
Aaron Strickland is the distribution manager of emergency operations at Georgia Power.
He said they've been working on their storm center to provide mutual assistance to an area that is expected to receive heavy snowfall.
"We were assigned the Pepco Company that serves the D.C. area. So we just kind of work out logically who we can help and who needs the help," Strickland said.
The same storm is expected to produce predominately rain in Georgia which is why Georgia Power is capable of traveling to help an area in greater need.
"It does not cost our rate payers anything. Pepco at this time is paying the full bill so that all the costs that we're incurring right now Pepco pays those. We do not make a profit. The reason we do that is we had a major storm and we asked Pepco to come down here we don't want them making a profit off of us. We want them to come and help our neighbors in Georgia," Strickland said.
Last year, Georgia Power spent several days on the road helping other communities get back on the grid.
"Last year, Georgia Power we were on the road about 62 days helping others. It's a blessing, it means the storms weren't here," Strickland said.
