Sequester cuts mean less money for GA unemployed

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The sequester in Washington is causing cuts some unemployed Georgia residents will feel in just a few weeks.

State officials have announced extended jobless benefits for the unemployed are being reduced by 10.7 percent.

That means the more than 61,000 Georgia residents getting extended unemployment benefits will get less money, 10.7 percent less to be exact.

If the average weekly amount is for $260, you're talking about $28 less each week.

Brenda Brown with Georgia Department of Labor said it's going to hurt. "When you don't have a job every penny counts. To lose $35 out of your weekly benefit amount can be a lot. To some people that's a lot of money," said Brown.

The state labor department's administrative funding also got cut by $3,000,000 and that could hurt operations, slowing things down.

It all goes into effect March 31.
