CBS Atlanta News began investigating a string of vacant properties in Gwinnett County after some residents began complaining.
Lucille Williford lives near the abandoned homes on Oak Drive.
"I know it's making the property value go down and coming down the street around that curve it's bad," Williford said.
Flood water damaged five homes nearly four years ago and now the properties are vacant with trash and debris on the outside and open doors and windows leading to the inside.
"It is an eyesore, and if you notice, all the glass is broken out and the kids have been doing that. I don't think they're being malicious it's just an empty house," resident Jeanette Garrison said.
CBS Atlanta News contacted Gwinnett County's Quality of Life Unit. They told us they've purchased one of the five properties with help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Once they acquire all of them they plan to demolish the homes, clear the land and create a green space.
"That's what I heard, they said FEMA money was finally released and they could do it and now you're telling me there's only one house that they bought. So should I go around with a basket and ask people to donate? You know, because I'm really good a fundraising," resident Alvina Leva said.
The lone property purchased by Gwinnett County to this point is 3280 Oak Dr. Demolition should begin there within 45 days.
"That's good, I'm glad they are," Williford said.
