Dunwoody parents spent Sunday evening doing homework of their own as they learned about the possibility of creating a school district just for their city.
Parent Matt Blankenship said he came because he is concerned about how DeKalb County Schools - which govern his children's schools - operate.
"We live in Dunwoody, we try to stay on top of what's going on in the school system - we're very concerned," Blankenship said.
The notion of creating a school system just for Dunwoody came after state Rep. Tom Taylor proposed new legislation that would allow cities formed after Jan. 1, 2005 to create their own school districts.
Councilwoman Rebecca Williams, of newly formed Brookhaven, came to see how her city would be affected.
"We are all very concerned about our DeKalb County School system and what's happening with the school board, the threat of the loss of accreditation," Williams said.
DeKalb County Schools has been placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, citing governance issues - something Dunwoody City Councilman Denis Shortal says is something no other school district in the nation has faced.
"We definitely have to do something," Shortal said. "We can't have kids walking around in unaccredited schools - this is America."
Blankenship said having the option of creating a separate school district gave him hope.
"This meeting is a start of how we can have our power and have our voice heard," Blankenship said.
But would creating a new school district cost taxpayers more money? Taylor said he is still working on the details, but that he does not believe it would. He said he also hopes creating new districts would not take money away from DeKalb County Schools' students.
