Fallen tree leaves Atlanta residents without lights and heat

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A massive tree fell around 9 a.m. Saturday, leaving about 50 Atlanta residents without lights and heat.

It happened near Erin Avenue and Hillside Drive in southwest Atlanta.

Some residents like Barbara Darrisaw suffered through about seven hours without heat.

"When we got back the house it was cold," said Darrisaw.

She returned home Saturday afternoon after being away for most of the morning.

"My house used electric heat so it's cold," said Darrisaw. "We'll just have to buy candles. We have plenty of blankets. We just have to keep on our coats and stuff."

In the northern part of the state, in Ellijay, the cold weather is coupled with a little snow.

CBS Atlanta crews captured video of farm animals trying to make the best of things.

But for the most part, the snow in the area amounted to spot-covered fields.

Back in southwest Atlanta, power crews scrambled to get things back up and running.

While residents weren't happy about being in their cold homes, they know that in the case of a fallen tree it's out of their hands.

"It's not much you can do or say about it because it's God's work. You just deal with it," said Darrisaw.

Utility crews had the power back for all but one house by 4 p.m.

The remaining house without power had its electric box pulled off when the tree fell.
