Help for tornado victims in Adairsville is still coming in, and Saturday it came in a unique way.
Donated items from throughout the area were auctioned off with all the proceeds going to storm victims. Those auctioned items raised more than $22,000 for the Adairsville disaster fund.
When the idea of an auction came up, the request went out for people to donate and it didn't take long for people to respond. People donated a little bit of everything: clothes, furniture, electronics, sports equipment, jewelry and even food.
Tammy Livinghood helped organize the auction.
"If you couldn't use a chainsaw, this was a way to donate items and know it was going to a good cause," said Livinghood.
But donating was just the beginning.
Showing up to buy it all was the really important part, and that didn't seem to be a problem.
Jack Watt was one of hundreds of people who showed up looking to buy.
"I think it's a great idea. It's working. They're in there turning it into cash right now," said Watt.
Watt helped out by buying a truckload of old tools and exercise equipment.
"Take it home and if it works that's good. If it doesn't I'll just throw it in the trash, and I've still done what I've laid out to do," said Watt.
Not only did they sell just about everything, some of the items went for a lot more than you would think.
Buddy Bagley is volunteering through the Lions Club.
"A red velvet cake went for about $700. That's a good cake," said Bagley.
Livinghood said selling the cake for that much was amazing.
"We were all standing up there crying out about it. It's a good feeling to know the money is going to the victims," said Livinghood.
Local leaders said they have several more events planned for the future because the community still has a long way to go.
