The laughter at the Lombardo house in Marietta hides the daily struggles of the family.
"I take it day-by-day. I am a laughter type of person," said Sarah Lombardo.
Sarah Lombardo and her husband, Brandon, have three children of their own. In early December, they brought in their two nieces and nephew whose parents were killed in a car accident.
Ryan and Jessica Lombardo died on Dec. 1. Police said the couple took a turn too fast on Paper Mill Road in Cobb County and went into the trees. The medical examiner said the couple died at the scene.
"Just from verbally speaking to each other that if anything happened to either of us, we would take in the kids," said Sarah Lombardo.
On Dec. 1, Sarah and Brandon Lombardo went from raising three kids to six. Then on Jan. 3, their world changed again.
Sarah Lombardo said her husband fell backwards as they left a restaurant. He had to undergo emergency brain surgery. He had part of his skull removed and doctors are scheduled to reattach the piece of bone next week.
"Unfortunately we don't have insurance. They (Ryan and Jessica Lombardo) didn't have life insurance," said Sarah Lombardo.
What adds to the financial struggle is Brandon Lombardo is self-employed; his business partner was his brother.
"I don't like to ask for help, even if I need it. Thankfully, we have neighbors like Gennie," said Sarah Lombardo.
Gennie Hampton lives across the street. She said when people hear about the Lombardos they want to help and she has become the go-between for the family and others.
"I am just so proud of her for stepping up and saying, 'these are now my children,'" said Hampton.
Sarah Lombardo said the support helps her smile for her family.
"Day-by-day, like I said. Stressing over it isn't going to get you nowhere," said Sarah Lombardo.
If you'd like to help the Lombardos, one of the children's schools set up a fund to help the kids. You can make a donation by visiting www.brumbyfoundation.com.
