An Atlanta-based company has responded to a lawsuit filed against the company over spyware.
Court documents in a class-action lawsuit against furniture rental company Aaron's Inc. allege spyware installed on rented computers secretly sent more than 185,000 emails back to the company, including some capturing webcam images of naked children and people having sex.
The documents filed Wednesday in federal court in western Pennsylvania say the Atlanta-based rental company hasn't informed at least 800 customers who plaintiffs say were targeted by spyware made by a Pennsylvania company.
Attorneys for the rental customers say the emails sometimes contained pictures secretly taken by the computers' webcams or other sensitive information including Social Security numbers and customer keystrokes.
Aaron's released a statement to CBS Atlanta Wednesday in response to the class action lawsuit:
"Aaron's, Inc. respects our customers' privacy. Not one of our 1,300+ Company-operated stores has used PC Rental Agent or any other product developed by Designerware LLC. The customers referenced in today's filings in the Byrd litigation are customers of certain independently owned and operated Aaron's franchisees and are not customers of Aaron's, Inc. The referenced Designerware emails were caused by actions taken by the certain franchisees, not Aaron's, Inc. Aaron's disagrees with the claims made in the litigation and will defend the litigation vigorously."
