An off-duty Coweta County firefighter rescued a woman from a fire on Wednesday.
According to authorities, a Sharpsburg home in the 7000 block of Highway 54 caught fire just before 7:40 a.m.
Coweta County firefighter Charles Franklin Jones III discovered the fire and carried Debra Pate, 40, from the home, according to reports.
"I noticed fire coming through the woods about 50 feet in the air," said Jones.
Jones is a third generation firefighter with 22 years of experience. He just couldn't pass up the smoke and flames.
"I kicked the door in with my foot. I walked inside and all I could see was the feet," said Jones.
Jones wasn't sure of the victim's condition at the time, but he knew he had to get her out quickly.
"My adrenaline was flowing real good. I wasn't thinking about it. I just went in and grabbed her and pulled her out," said Jones. "I didn't think a big deal of it at the beginning. I was just doing my job."
Jones and a neighbor performed CPR until paramedics arrived and took over.
Pate was taken to Piedmont Newnan Hospital in serious condition.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The investigation is ongoing.
