ATLANTA (AP) -
Emory University students are planning a rally amid continuing controversy over an essay by the school president, who used the three-fifths compromise on slavery to make a point about finding common ground.
The "Rally Against Racism" is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the campus near Atlanta's eastern edge.
Emory President James Wagner wrote about the 1787 compromise in the winter edition of Emory Magazine. In the compromise, northern and southern states agreed that three-fifths of the slave population would count toward representation in Congress, giving southerners more power in the House of Representatives.
Wagner later wrote an apology, saying he considered slavery to be heinous and inhuman and that he should have stated that clearly in his essay.
A faculty group voted to censure Wagner over the article.
