Two Dachshunds who suffered inhumane treatment four months ago are getting a new "leash" on life with a new owner.
In October, the then 1-year-old puppies, who are brothers, were dropped off at Clayton County Animal Control and given the names Bullet and Pistol.
Bullet had been shot at close range with a paintball gun and a BB gun, and while Pistol hadn't been shot, he needed medical care for serious cuts on his ears.
The pups had been rescued by Partners4Pets from the animal control facility when CBS Atlanta News learned about them.
Woodstock resident Carrie Olena said she watched Bullet and Pistol's story on CBSAtlanta.com and knew she wanted to help.
"I actually balled the first time I saw it," Olena said.
Now the pups, who have recuperated, have a new home with Olena, as well as the new names of Mylo and Max.
"I can't image anyone being that cruel to animals," Olena said.
Olena adopted the pups on Feb. 9 through Green Pets America. It's one of two nonprofit rescue groups that helped save the dogs.
Olena's adoption coordinator, Paige Rinker, told CBS Atlanta News that choosing the right home is not something they take lightly, especially in cases of abused animals.
"We're not looking just to adopt the animals out to be played with and walked. We want them adopted out to be loved the rest of their lives, and never to go through what they went through again," Rinker said.
Although Max and Mylo have only been in their new home for a couple weeks, they are fitting in fine with their new owner.
"I just want to give them a loving home and give them all the love and happiness that they both deserve," Olena said.
The Atlanta Humane Society offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the abuse.
At last check, no one has come forward and no one has been arrested.
