A DeKalb County mother was arrested Tuesday after her 4-year-old daughter was found wandering the streets in the middle of the night alone.
It happened near Stone Mountain, and police said if not for a good Samaritan, things could have been a lot worse.
It happened at the Highland Forest Apartments on Central Drive where the mother and child had just moved a few weeks ago.
Police said the mother, Keyyonia Johnson, went upstairs and went to sleep, leaving her 4-year-old daughter alone downstairs.
"The child was unfamiliar with the area and didn't go upstairs, instead she chose to unlock the door and go outside in an attempt to locate her mother," said Mekka Parish with the DeKalb County Police Department.
Neighbors in the apartment complex were shocked.
"You upstairs asleep getting your z's in? That's crazy," said Justus Wesley.
But leaving the house was just the beginning.
The little girl managed to make it out of the complex and to a busy road about a mile away where a good Samaritan picked her up to help.
"When she was found it had been raining, her clothes were wet and she was cold based on her temperatures so she was fortunate that this person found her, cared for her, and that the child was not put in any significant physical danger," said Parish.
"Anybody could have got that little girl and anything could have happened to her. Thank God she was found," said Wesley.
Once police figured out where the little girl lived, Johnson was arrested. The little girl was taken into state custody; something neighbors in the area said was a good thing.
Denorris Walker has two kids of his own.
"Anything could have happened to that little girl so I feel like it was the right thing," said Walker.
Johnson was officially charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor. She's already out on bail, but her child remains in state custody.
