When it was time for DeKalb County parent Kim Alt to ask her question to DeKalb County Schools Board of Education member Jay Cunningham, she didn't beat around the bush.
"Why wouldn't you want to step down when the morale in the school house is so very low?" asked Alt.
Cunningham faced Tough Questions from parents and concerned citizens at a town hall meeting hosted by Restore DeKalb on Saturday.
It was the first time any school board member spoke publicly since the State Board of Education recommended Gov. Nathan Deal suspend six of the nine members. Cunningham is one of the six. He told the crowd he will not step down.
"I was voted in. I'm standing in front of you today to ask you to get behind me and let me finish my term, that's a constitutional right," said Cunningham.
"I agree with you we have our rights as citizens. We do need to look into recalling you and the other board members, but that's the long way home and that's the correct way. Why wouldn't you step aside so we can move forward in healing?" asked another parent.
"Don't sit here and think that changing or people getting off this board is going to make anything any different by appointing somebody else," said Cunningham.
