Residents at the Lenox Hills Apartments in Atlanta said, a day after management at their apartment complex sealed off the bottom part of a building to keep feral cats out, that they are concerned cats were sealed inside.
One resident, who did not want to talk on camera for fear of being evicted, said he peered inside of grates that workers had put in place last night and saw several pairs of, what he assumed were, cat eyes.
"There's been moaning and cat cries coming from underneath the building," the man said. "Other cats are going to the vents and you can hear them moaning like they're searching for something."
Fred Jackson, who said he was a property manager for the apartment complex, said, cats were cleared out of the crawl space before it was sealed, but that workers found evidence of people feeding the cats, something Jackson said makes the problem worst.
"There was a huge quantity of cat food dumped under the crawl space," Jackson said. "We're trying to prevent that. It's not a safe environment for the cats and the humans."
One resident from a neighboring complex, who also wished to remain anonymous, is glad management is trying to keep feral cats away, but hopes it does so in a humane manner.
"I feel bad for the cats, but they're causing the problems because they're feeding the cats from all over the neighborhood," the neighbor said. "There's cat feces, urine all over the place. When it starts getting warm the bugs are bad. We have people that don't even like to come visit us because the smell is so bad."
Already, one of the seals put into place at the bottom of the building has come off. Jackson said workers will replace it and make sure no animals are back inside.
