Atlanta police said they have identified a suspect in the hit-and-run accident that killed a grandmother as she walked to a bus stop to go to work Tuesday morning.
Atlanta police said she Cassandra Head, 53, was in a crosswalk at about 6 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive near Bakers Ferry Road in southwest Atlanta when an SUV struck her. The driver did not stop to check on her. Head died at the scene.
Head's daughter-in-law, Felisa Wilkins, stumbled upon the scene earlier in the day.
"Me and my son walked up there and saw the police car, but we didn't know what was going on," said Wilkins.
Hours later, she learned that the police scene is the spot where her mother-in-law died while on her way to work at her job at a post office.
Wilkins told CBS Atlanta News that Head had five adult children and 16 grandchildren. She said family members, particularly Head's grandchildren, are taking the news hard.
"They're not doing good because she was the backbone of the family," said Wilkins. "She cared about everybody else's needs before she did herself."
