A Kennesaw State University student is still fighting for her life after a hit-and-run driver slammed into her along a road in Athens.
Officers found the red truck witnesses said hit Emily Bowman, but no arrest has been made.
Police said Bowman was walking along Oak Street when she was blind-sided by a truck that not only hit her, but just kept on going.
It was news her father never expected to hear early Saturday morning.
"A Cherokee County deputy came to the door at 5:20 Saturday morning and knocked on the door. It never crossed my mind it had anything to do with Emily. I just said, 'What have I done wrong now?'" said the victim's father, Dale Bowman.
He immediately rushed to Athens Regional Medical Center, where doctors have been doing everything to keep her alive.
"The main concern is the head injury and the neurosurgeon says Emily has her worried," said Dale Bowman.
More than 30 of Emily Bowman's closest friends visited her in the hospital since she was hit. Anna Lee Strickland was with Bowman about an hour before she was hit.
"She has scratches everywhere, but the worst part is the swelling," Strickland said. The only features I could recognize on her, is I know what her hands and feet look like, I know what her nose looks like, but nothing else is recognizable. Her face is all swollen, her eyes, you can't see her eyelashes even, because they are so swollen."
Strickland and Bowman were visiting friends from Woodstock High School celebrating Strickland's 20th birthday, which was on Monday. The two have known each other since second grade.
"It is really hard," Strickland said. "I just hope he feels terrible enough to come forward. I honestly wish he could see her right now, because she doesn't look the same at all. And I just wish he could see what he has done to us."
While doctors continue to work on Emily Bowman, police are continuing to search for the man responsible.
They have the truck, and they know who owns it, but they want to be sure before making the arrest.
"I'll be honest. I think we have enough to make an arrest now, but we do want to be thorough. We want to dot the I's and cross the T's, as they say. Having the truck and knowing who the owner is doesn't necessarily put him behind the wheel. That's what we're working on," said Sgt. Raymond Von Anderson of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Dale Bowman is confident police will make an arrest. He didn't talk much about the man who hit his daughter but he did make a few comments.
"This is not his first rodeo, but it will be his last," said Dale Bowman. I'll see him in court."
