In a period of two hours on Thursday morning, five victims were targeted by armed robbers.
The locations were from Southwest Atlanta to Midtown. During the hours between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. the criminals were driving around metro Atlanta looking for targets.
"Generally, how they happen is someone rolls up in a car jumps out with a weapon and demand their belongings," Atlanta Police Spokesperson Carlos Campos said. "These were clearly dangerous people committing armed robberies and in some cases accosting the victims with weapons and assaulting them with weapons. In a couple of the cases the victims were struck with the firearms used to commit the robberies."
Police said they have made two arrests and are in the process of charging one suspect with five counts of armed robbery, five counts of Possessions of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and five counts of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.
Another suspect will be charged with possession of stolen property.
Police said victims were able to provide information linking all five robberies.
The locations for the robberies were Avon Avenue SW (at Princess Avenue), Metropolitan Parkway SW (at Pegg Road), 1554 Piedmont Ave. NE, 1280 West Peachtree St. NE, 10th St. NE (at Argonne).
"We pay for extra patrols in Virginia Highland, too, and it really helps," Laura Stephens said.
Stephens, who lives down the street from one of the armed robberies near Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Street, said she pays for extra patrols and wouldn't feel safe without it. But the news of the violence surprised her.
"I am shocked, I really am shocked. I feel like this area is really safe it is families and younger families that live in this community and [police] are going to take the proper steps to change that."
This is still an active investigation according to police. More arrests could be made.
