Less than 48 hours after President Barack Obama made immigration reform a key part of his State of the Union address, and one day after U.S. Senators took up the issue during a hearing on Capitol Hill, state and local leaders in Georgia stood up for the cause during a rally at the State Capitol.
The Georgia AFL-CIO and the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council, with the backing of several state law makers, presented a resolution that supports a road map to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans.
State lawmakers in attendance included Senators Vincent Fort and Nan Orrock, as well as Rep. Pedro Marin.
Orrock said they're not trying to appeal to their fellow lawmakers on the state level for pro-immigration reform. They're appealing straight to the state's Congressional delegation in Washington.
"The state has done it wrong," said Orrock. "The point of today is to call on our Congressional delegation from Georgia to do the right thing, to get on the right side, and help promote comprehensive immigration reform."
"The message is that immigrants are the new Americans, are part of the backbone of our workforce."
CBS Atlanta News will have more reaction from the Capitol starting at 4 p.m.
