The city of College Park held a gun buyback program Saturday.
Lines started to form three hours before the doors opened. The city ran out of money before the event was over and had to turn people away.
Organizers allowed people to turn in their guns in exchange for cash. Handguns were worth $100, and $150 was paid out for rifles or assault-style weapons.
No questions were asked. However, guns will be checked against a database for serial numbers before they're destroyed.
The College Park City Council allocated $20,000 for the event with the goal of ridding the streets of weapons.
"We're hoping for a lot of people to turn in guns," said College Park Police Chief Ron Fears in a press release. "It is my hope that this program will raise the consciousness of our citizens about guns."
The city collected 172 guns. One of those guns was turned in by Gene Friedin who is a competitive shooter.
"I had a pistol I didn't really use. I just figured rather than this pistol falling into the wrong hands, I'll just trade it in," said Friedin.
The gun buyback program was scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the city auditorium located at 3631 Main St.
