It's not unusual to hear someone say fill it up at Manuel's Tavern. But now when someone says it, they may not be talking about a beverage. The iconic landmark now has electric car charging stations.
"It is really exciting," said Don Francis, the president of The EV Club of the South.
The club used some of its own money and took advantage of the federally funded EV Project, to pay for the charging pumps.
"The federal grant provided the charging station and $1,000 towards the installation. So for the business it wound up being about $500 a unit out of their pocket," said Francis.
"It made a lot of sense. There are a lot of things I can't change out of tradition here at Manuel's and that I wouldn't change out of tradition, but we can definitely upgrade some technology," said Brian Maloof, the owner of Manuel's.
Customers pay about $1 an hour to charge.
"I love the convenience. I love the fact that when I come back out, my car is charged up. I'll pay it," said Chris Campbell, an electric car owner.
The EV Project aims to get 5,000 charging stations installed in 10 critical markets. About 500 of those will be spread across middle Georgia and metro Atlanta. Francis said installing more charging stations is the only way to make electric cars more viable to more people.
"It is seeding the market. It is putting a few in a few critical locations that people say, 'Oh, there are charging stations out there, so maybe I do need to look at the vehicle or maybe I can buy the vehicle now so I know where to charge it,'" said Francis.
