Jacqueline Barber is a tough retired 20-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department who has been reduced to tears. Barber, who is fighting to stave off foreclosure of her home, has started taking massive amounts of medicine again after learning her bone marrow cancer has returned.
"I was doing great. I was in remission for over two years and I had not had my cancer treatments or anything until all this started up and it woke up the sleeping demon," said Barber.
Barber is suing her former lender for fraud. She said Wells Fargo used fake signatures on documents to push her home into foreclosure while negotiating with her on a loan modification. She said after going to court and meeting with the new lenders, GMAC and U.S. Bank, she thought she may be out of danger.
"Right now I am having to pay $1,800 to the Magistrate Court of Fayette County as rent until the banks and I come to some sort of agreement," Barber said.
But Barber said the banks are playing hardball and will not accept what they paid for the house at auction.
"We offered them $150,000 but they want $190,000, and I am thinking I can't see what $40,000 is going to make a big difference to that bank. They've already made money off the insurance from the foreclosure and now they want an additional $40,000," Barber said.
CBS Atlanta News tried to contact the lenders, but the calls were not immediately returned.
Barber said she can't afford the extra money and she's concerned the stress will eventually wear her down.
"Right now I am back on full treatments for cancer with the steroids and chemotherapy and all those things, I have no taste buds in my mouth, I'm still limping around with this bad leg, hip and back," Barber said. "But you know, God is good and I know he will find a way."
