Firefighters are monitoring hot spots after battling a large fire at a warehouse in northwest Atlanta Monday morning.
The fire started around 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Mayson Turner Road.
Fire investigators told CBS Atlanta News that building once housed a recycling plant, but that it had been inoperable ever since a previous fire in March of 2011.
Since the 2011 fire, the facility has been used as a warehouse. Inside were stacks of plywood, plastics and bales of paper - materials that proved to be perfect fuel for another fire.
Sunday's fire sent plumes of black smoke into the sky, attracting curious people from miles away.
"At first, I thought maybe it was a gas station because the smoke was so black, like smoke igniting from the fuel," said Travis Aniton. "Then I thought maybe it was a house fire. So I came over here, and I see it's larger than a house."
No one was inside the building on Sunday and no one was injured. Fire investigators have not yet determined what caused the fire.
"We've got the fire investigators working right now as we speak," said Deputy Chief Randall Slaughter of the Atlanta Fire Department. "As soon as it's safe for them to actually get close enough to the building, they'll try to make some kind of determination as to the cause."
