Friends of the teens killed in an early Sunday morning wreck came by the site where they died throughout the day with tearful goodbyes.
Cobb County police said 19-year-old Stephen Nolasco was driving a 2001 silver Volvo northbound on Sandy Plains Road at a high rate of speed when he apparently lost control. Police believe the car then crashed into a brick sign at Kinjac Drive when the car caught on fire. Both Nolasco and his 18-year-old passenger Matthew Bennett died.
Kleymer Oliveira, a friend of both victims, was emotional at the site.
"You can't replace people like that, but you can pray for them, hope for the best for their families," Oliveira said.
Family friends Luis and Yolanda Berrios, said they hope people don't focus on why the accident happened, but instead pray for the victims' families.
"We watched them grow up," Luis Berrios said. "So our relationship has been for many, many years. For us, it's family."
His wife, Yolanda Berrios, said the pair was remembered at church this morning.
"Today we had a ceremony in our parish and it was full of kids that wanted to be there and say, 'We are with your family, we suffer with you and we pray for you,'" Yolanda Berrios said.
Cobb County police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident at this time, but are running toxicology tests as part of standard procedures.
Police are asking for the assistance of the public in helping them to determine what activities both the driver and passenger may have been involved in prior to the crash. Anyone with information which may assist them is asked to call 770-499-3987.
