Atlanta police gang unit investigating Price Middle School shooting
Telvis Douglas, 14
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Atlanta police and Atlanta Public Schools officials have released more details in the shooting that occurred early Thursday afternoon at Price Middle School in southeast Atlanta.
Telvis Douglas, 14, was shot in the back of the neck in a courtyard outside the school by a 15-year-old male student just before 2 p.m., according to Atlanta Police Chief George Turner.
An off-duty Atlanta police officer working as a school resource officer at the school was able to get the suspect to drop the gun before he was arrested, Turner said.
During a news conference that was held by Turner, Mayor Kasim Reed and Atlanta Public Schools officials on Friday, Turner said that the Atlanta Police Department's Gang Unit is now investigating the shooting.
He continued that while it was unknown if Douglas was the intended shooting victim or if he was involved in a gang, the shooting stemmed from a verbal fight between two gangs.
Atlanta Public Schools officials were also questioned about how the suspect got the gun onto Price's campus, and whether or not they could confirm that the school's metal detectors were working on Thursday.
School officials said they were investigating whether or not the detectors were operating properly, but would not comment any further.
Reed spoke at length about school security, and said that he's working to install cameras in Atlanta's public schools to provide extra security for students.
"As police approach the school, the property, even as you have an officer on site, we need to be able to see what's going on and around our kids," Reed said. "This is something that is doable and it is affordable, so it is a matter of will."
Turner also provided an update on the female paraprofessional who was injured following the shooting. He said it was likely that she was knocked down in the commotion and was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for minor injuries.
As for the suspect, Turner said that the Fulton County district attorney would have to decide whether or not to charge him as a juvenile or an adult. Police were not releasing his name for fear of retaliatory acts against him.
