Even with a slight glaze of ice hanging over Dahlonega, Trish Creef, the owner of Back Porch Oyster Bar said business has been terrible.
"Tonight, we have lots of cancellations," Creef said. "Usually we have 200 people in here, all day today we have had about 20."
The freezing rain that fell across Lumpkin County left a coat of solid ice on cars and facades of buildings, but road crews dropping a salt and rock mixture stayed ahead of the freeze.
"I've just seen a little bit of ice on the shoulders is all," Ron Simmons, a Dahlonega city worker driving a salt spreader, said. "On a scale of one to 10 this is a one. I am glad it didn't get as bad as I thought."
But bad weather means more than just icy roads. To Creef it meant a couple thousand dollars in lost revenue.
"Probably just for today it would be about five grand," Creef said. "During the off-season we are slower on weeknights, so we really need our Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to get us through the week. So, when it happens on a weekend it is really tough."
Georgia State Patrol said they investigated 38 crashes with eight injuries related to the weather on Friday. Luckily, there were no fatalities. That total covers an area from Cumming north to the North Carolina border; from Blue Ridge east to the South Carolina line and down to Athens.
With warmer temperatures tomorrow and for the rest of the week, Creef hopes the Back Porch Oyster Bar will be packed over the next couple of days.
"That would be wonderful," Creef said. "We'll be open and ready."
