Crews with Georgia's Department of Transportation spread a mixture of salt and stone on bridges, overpasses and ramps throughout Northeast Georgia Friday, as a winter mix of sleet and rain coated the area.
"Temperature is going to be really important the rest of the day. If it can get above freezing we can get some sunshine that will help us immensely and isolate our issues to just the bridges and not the roadways," said Teri Pope, spokeswoman for GDOT.
GDOt had scattered reports of ice on bridges, overpasses and interstate ramps, that's were crews focused their attention.
"Those structures are much colder than the road, which has the earth insulating it. Bridges are the most dangerous, that includes interchanges, elevated ramps even bridges across an interstate. Sometimes you don't realize that's a bridge," said Pope.
In Northeast Georgia there are more than 750 bridges on interstates and state routes.
"You can't go anywhere without crossing a bridge. Think about your routes. Think about those bridges before you get to them so you can have a planned reaction instead of being reactionary to the condition after you've lost control," said Pope.
As long as there is a threat of winter weather, Pope said GDOT crews will continue spreading salt and stone on areas where ice can form.
Drivers should use caution when they see work crews.
"Never ever pass a GDOT dump truck. They are spreading a mixture of salt and stone. It can damage your vehicle if you get even with it. If you get in front of the dump truck that's no man's land where no work has occurred," said Pope.
Crews didn't take any chances at state offices. They even spread a salt mixture on steps and handicap ramps.
Pope said this year GDOT is better prepared for icy weather.
"We really have retooled our winter weather battle plan since 2011. Our brine that we use is a new component that we learned from other states."
