A shooting on campus at a Texas college has Georgia lawmakers reconsidering their push to pass laws that would allow students to carry guns on campus.
On Wednesday, Republican Majority Caucus Chair Butch Miller of Gainesville told CBS Atlanta News it was not the time to arm college students in Georgia.
"For us to be talking about college kids having guns on campus I think is a very slippery slope, and we need to proceed with extreme caution," Miller said.
Miller said he feared it could happen at state colleges in Georgia if the laws are changed.
"I'm a gun advocate I'm a gun owner," Miller said. "I love to hunt. I think that guns properly used are not dangerous but circumstances like the one in Texas, we need to be guarding against it."
Democratic Representative Alisha Morgan of Austell said she agrees with Miller. She said she wants a holistic approach to securing and protecting students across the state and believes more guns only increase the likelihood of campus shootings.
"This is a prime example of what happens when you allow more guns in public places where two gentleman who could have resolved their issue without any violence," Morgan said.
