ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Georgia Power crews are working to restore electricity to hundreds in southwest Atlanta after a large tree fell across Cascade Road, taking down power lines and leaving residents in the dark.
The incident was reported just before 4 a.m. Thursday, and arriving officers found that the tree was completely blocking the road. There were no injuries.
Georgia Power spokesman Brian Green said about 200 mostly residential customers lost power when the tree disrupted the lines.
One Georgia Power worker on scene said weather had a big part to play in the tree coming down, adding that they've been "chasing trees" across the city for quite some time.
"It's all the rain, and it has a lot to do with the drought, and it causes the roots to rot out. And the least little bit of wind, it gets top heavy, and falls over," said Lewis Sorrell, a tree cutter with the City of Atlanta.
Georgia Power officials said the power is expected to be restored to all homes by noon.
