Carbon monoxide detectors could be mandatory in Georgia schools if one state lawmaker has her way.
This comes after 40 students and six teachers were hospitalized after a carbon monoxide leak at Finch Elementary School last month.
"I want to make sure that our schools here in Georgia are installed and equipped with the carbon monoxide detectors and warning equipment," state Rep. Sheila Jones said.
Jones introduced House Bill 23 last month in hopes that one day all public and private schools in the state will have carbon monoxide detectors.
"Our children's lives are priceless and they look to us as legislators and we have to put the money there to save a child's life," Jones said.
Even though a lot of districts agree with the idea, some say money is a concern.
The Cobb County School System told CBS Atlanta News that the cost to purchase and install the detectors could cost the district $171,000 to equip every school.
It's also likely to be expensive for Atlanta Public Schools.
"In light of what happened at Finch Elementary School, we certainly are looking into putting carbon monoxide detectors in all of our schools," Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Stephen Alford said.
Gainesville city schools installed carbon monoxide detectors in all of its schools just days after the Finch Elementary incident. The price tag was about $3,000, and officials believe it was money well spent.
"This is just a wake-up call. We need to do something about it and we need to find the money and make the money available," Jones said.
The legislation would require the State Fire Marshal and State Board of Education to determine how many detectors are needed in each school and where they would be placed.
