CBS Atlanta News began investigating NAARI Housing Counseling Agency in Tucker on Friday after a local woman said she paid the company $1,500 to help her save her home from foreclosure, but didn't get what she paid for.
"I really think somebody should do something to stop them," Consumer Magrieta Segers said.
The Georgia Department of Banking and Finance attempted to do just that in December of 2011.
The state ordered NAARI to stop operating when they discovered that the business was involved in mortgage brokering and lending without a license.
"I just think that it's horrible that people can prey on innocent people like that; people that are really in a desperate situation," Segers said.
Segers said the company met her at a McDonald's in Morrow to fill out paperwork and they never provided copies.
It's not the first time consumers have complained. CBS Atlanta's Mike Paluska confronted the business late last year about their business practices. The Better Business Bureau warns if it sounds too good to be true, it typically is.
"I think one thing is that when you've got a company and they're asking for money up front with no guarantee that they can help you in any way, that's a red flag. You should be cautious," Better Business Bureau employee Mike Boynton said.
CBS Atlanta News went to NAARI's business location Friday to ask them more tough questions about their business practices, but they had moved out and the office space was up for lease.
"I don't want anybody else to go through what I've gone through," Segers said.
The Better Business Bureau recommends that you should never pay a company up front. Plus, it's a good idea to go to the business to make sure it exists. Also, if you're trying to modify your loan call your bank directly.
