The man accused of murdering a Griffin girl just days before Christmas was denied bond in a court hearing Thursday morning.
Shane Clifton Collett, 40, is charged with kidnapping, murder and concealing the body of 9 year-old Skylar Dials. Collett's defense attorneys argued before Superior Court Judge Tommy Hawkinson that Collett has never before faced any criminal charges and is not a risk to leave the jurisdiction and evade prosecution.
However, Hawkinson sided with the argument by Griffin Circuit District Attorney Scott Ballard, that Collett poses a threat to flee the area.
Dials' family last saw the 9-year-old leaving her Griffin home to go to a friend's house. When she didn't return that afternoon, they grew worried.
Police found her body the next morning in a brush pile, just 300 yards from her home.
"I need to be a little careful about how much I say, but at this point it looks like she was choked to death," said Ballard, following Thursday morning's hearing.
Collett's defense attorneys declined comment.
"It's really hard. I just don't understand why somebody would do this to her. I don't. She didn't deserve it," Skylar's cousin, Brandy Grizzard, told CBS Atlanta News shortly after Skylar's death.
Police soon arrested Collett, a man who had recently moved into the home Skylar was visiting. They did not immediately release a cause of death or motive. Police said there was no evidence of sexual assault.
"He disgusts me, and he deserves to be dead. We deserve to see him killed on live TV. That's how I feel," Grizzard said.
Ballard said it could be several months before the case goes to trial. He said it is possible that the state may seek the death penalty in this case, depending on the outcome of the investigation by state and local authorities.
