Neighbors: Douglasville train crossing is dangerous
DOUGLAS COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A driver escaped serious injury when a train collided with her car.
The unidentified woman was able to get out of her vehicle in plenty of time before an oncoming train crashed into her car which was stuck on the tracks in Douglasville Tuesday afternoon.
It happened where Highway 92 and Mozley Road cross over train tracks.
Neighbors say it's not the first time someone's car got stuck on the tracks. They worry the problem might be how the asphalt was laid and the nearly one foot drop off between the roadway and the railroad ties.
Beverly Woods and her husband Robert Woods had a front-row seat to the wreck.
"She made a turn here and she went too far over," said Robert Woods. "She's an elderly lady and didn't judge her distance right. But that's what happened, she ran too far over here and she got stuck."
The locomotive pushed the vehicle 100 feet before finally stopping. The Woods say cars get struck on the tracks all too often.
"We've been having truckers get stuck out here, vehicles get stuck on the track," said Robert Woods. "I've helped four or five who got stuck on the track."
The intersection is Douglasville's most accident-prone railroad crossing. Apart from several collisions in the past year, there have also been 22 documented incidents of cars getting stuck on the tracks.
Norfolk Southern repaved the crossing but left a considerable drop-off instead of a tapering slope, and G-DOT restriped the road.
Robert Woods doesn't think that's enough to keep drivers on the road.
"No matter how much work they do people aren't aware of how far to turn," said Robert Woods.
Beverly Woods would rather see the crossing shut down before someone gets seriously hurt.
"I think they should close it up because if I was to see somebody gets killed I would die myself," said Beverly Woods.
Several messages left with Norfolk Southern spokespeople weren't immediately returned by Tuesday night.
CBS Atlanta wants to see if the railroad plans to make any improvements at the crossing to prevent more accidents from happening again.
