Another DeKalb County water main burst Saturday morning, leaving hundreds of residents without water and part of Clairmont Road closed down.
It happened near the Peachtree DeKalb Airport around 6 a.m. Water pressure to the airport was also low and restaurants had to close.
Resident Wesley McAlbe said he noticed the problem when he started to make his morning coffee.
"I got up this morning at 5 o'clock and I didn't have no water," McAlbe said. "I don't know what happened down there."
A 30-inch, iron water main burst, destroying nearby sidewalks and road. The pipe was scheduled to be replaced as part of a five-year, $1.25 billion plan to replace aging water and sewage pipes across DeKalb County, said county spokesman Burke Brennan. He estimated the pipe could be nearly 50 years old.
"There's been a number of years where the maintenance has not kept up with the pace of growth in DeKalb County," Brennan said. "We do have some old lines."
A similar situation happened in May of last year. A water main that was scheduled to be replaced burst and flooded several homes. Brennan said crews are working to replace the pipes as quickly as possible.
"We know that these lines are old," Brennan said. "We have a scope of work in place and over the next five years, not only these old pipes, but all of the other old pipes in DeKalb County will be replaced."
Brennan said water should return to affected residents by late Saturday night. He said it could take a week longer to patch up Clairmont Road. Copyright 2013 WGCL-TV (Meredith Corporation). All rights reserved.
