The Bartow County School Board member who was arrested for allegedly hitting a teenager with her SUV over a parking space at a Walmart submitted her resignation to Governor Nathan Deal Thursday morning.
Police said security video clearly shows board Vice Chair Angie Cornett lurch towards Emily Gullege, 17, after a short argument.
Gullege said she was holding the parking space for a friend who had just had a baby.
Cornett's attorney, John Mroczko, released this statement:
"For personal and family reasons, Angie Cornett submitted her resignation from her position as member of the School Board of Bartow County to Governor Nathan Deal and to Superintendent John Harper. Mrs. Cornett believed it to be an honor to serve on the Board and represent the people of District Three of Bartow County, however, she felt it was time that she step aside."
Bartow Co. Sheriff's Sgt. Jonathan Rogers describes the video.
"She described that she was waiting in a parking space saving it for a person for a friend of hers, and upon standing there another car approached her, they had some words exchanged. The driver of the car wanted her to move out of the way, she did not want to move. You can see she was standing there when the vehicle lurched forward and had to move out of the way," Rogers said.
Gullege wasn't hurt, but tire marks on her pants show where she was hit.
"Nowadays and times people don't have patience or time you know, and aren't considerate of other people," Walmart shopper Oliver Houston said.
"Seems like both of them were kind of in the wrong," shopper Judy Benefield said.
Marie Hulgan thinks Cornett should no longer be allowed to serve on the BOE.
"She should be relieved of her duties if she has no more patience than that," Hulgan said.
No one answered at Cornett's home when CBS Atlanta tried to reach her on Wednesday. The SUV used in the incident was in her driveway.
Mroczko spoke with CBS Atlanta late Wednesday night. He says his client tells a very different story from how police say the incident occurred.
"The young lady comes out and makes contact with my client's vehicle," said Mroczko. "She steps in front of my client's vehicle and to the side. I certainly do not see my client running over a young lady as has been asserted."
Mroczko continued saying the reason the story is garnering so much attention is because his client is a public official.
"But for my client being a school board member, this would not be news," said Mroczko.
Police suggest stepping away from a situation before it turns criminal.
"If you're in a parking lot and having a squabble over a parking space, rather than it escalate into something further, I recommend you move to a different parking place," Rogers said.
Rogers said more charges could be filed against Cornett.
Gullege is not commenting about what happened.
