Two Atlanta police officers who were killed in an early November helicopter crash were remembered on Tuesday.
The Cycle Kings motorcycle club put on a charity ride to raise money for the families of officers Richard Halford and Shawn Smiley.
The men of Cycle Kings said they remember the night the officers were killed as if it were yesterday. Haliford and Smiley were in an Atlanta police helicopter searching for a missing boy when the helicopter hit some power lines and crashed into a southwest Atlanta street.
"I am a former police officer, it touched me deeply," said club member Elliott Scott.
Through Tuesday's bike ride, the Cycle Kings, who have several members who are APD officers, remembered that sacrifice and rode to honor the officers' lives.
"We pretty much said, 'Look, we at least got to do something for these guys, they are a part of our family,'" said club member and APD officer, Al Watkins.
Despite the rain and cold, the crew rode from Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in northwest Atlanta to Jimi Nixx BBQ on Cobb Parkway in Austell.
Each rider donated $20 to the cause.
"For us to give back to them a little bit of our time and a little bit of our finances is a drop in the bucket for the things that they've done and the ultimate sacrifice that they gave," Scott said.
As the investigation into what caused the crash continues, the group chose to focus on the good that both officers did in the community.
They are also committed to finding ways to comfort the officers' families and want them to know they aren't alone.
"They got family everywhere if they need somebody," Watkins said. "We are a part of that law enforcement community and we are showing support to them."
