The Department of Driver Services is encouraging drivers to give themselves extra time if they plan to visit one of the metro Atlanta locations over the holidays.
The centers are always closed on Monday and with Christmas falling on Tuesday, they were also closed.
That meant longer lines than usual at many locations.
"I have no idea how long it's going to take because this line is not the end of it," said Connie Hutchins, who was trying to get a new license. "Then you have to sit down and wait for them to call your number, right?"
Rob Mikell, the commissioner of Driver Services was so concerned about the crowds that he personally visited the Norcross location to make sure things were running smoothly.
"Being closed on Tuesday, which is normally our busiest day, was unusual for us," Mikell said. "That's why we're encouraging people to go on line and do what they can there to make sure that they don't actually have to physically come into the building."
Mikell visited with customers and made sure that they had the information they needed.
"You can wait until maybe Thursdays and Fridays are a little bit slower, generally speaking," suggested Mikell. "The best thing to do is go on line, do what you can there and check the wait times."
Many of those in line were frustrated with the wait times.
"Well, it throws everything off schedule," said Jeremiah Walden, who came to renew his license. "We have to readjust. Things we thought we could get done maybe have to wait until another day."
With New Year's Day falling on a Tuesday, Driver Services will also be closed on that day.
"It's easier to get a divorce than it is to get your driver's license," complained Gavin Hutchins.
