A Carrollton newborn diagnosed with a rare skin disease is home for Christmas.
The disease, epidermylosis bullosa, or E.B., causes the skin to blister and fall off.
The baby, William Eli Burkhart, born Nov. 27, 2012 at Tanner Medical Center, was immediately taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egelston.
Baby Eli was released from the hospital Monday evening. His Christmas Eve release was a Christmas wish come true for his parents. He was expected to stay in the hospital upwards of two months.
"It's the greatest Christmas present I could have ever asked for," said Jessica Spicer.
Baby Eli's parents, Jessica Spicer and Randall Burkhart, were caught off guard by the disease, which is inherited. The couple told CBS Atlanta News they did not test for it. They hope others can learn from their story.
"It was hard at first. Now it's like something normal we got to do," Randall Burkhart said, about learning how to care for their son's special needs.
The couple will need to purchase special items like clothes and a car seat that will help cut down on the blistering.
The couple said they are blessed to have the love and support of their family and church.
Spicer's parents, Kenneth and Teresa Spicer, were at the hospital when Eli was born. He is their 12th grandchild.
"He's just touched all of our hearts," said Eli's grandmother, Teresa Spicer, who also told CBS Atlanta News that church members, friends and even perfect strangers have stepped up offing to help in any way they can.
When it was initially not know if baby Eli would live to see Christmas, "home for the holidays" has taken on a very special meaning for the family.
"For him to get to come home was God working and prayer's work," Teresa Spicer said.
There is an account set up for the infant at Community Southern Bank in Bremen, GA, under the name "Faith Full Gospel Youth Group For Baby Eli."
