Matthew Cunningham's family was overjoyed as he walked out of the main arrival gate at Hartsfield-Jackson International and into his family's arms.
He hugged his wife, Queshaunna, kissed his little girl, Kamara and said hello to his newborn daughter, Kamyla, for the very first time.
"I don't think words can describe it," Cunningham said.
Cunningham, a logistics specialist the U.S. Navy, has not been home since March. He did not get to see Kamyla's birth, but he plans to make up for lost time.
"It feels real good coming home after a long time, so I'm very happy."
Christmas Eve was an emotional day at Hartsfield-Jackson. Children waited for the grandparents, wives welcomed home their husbands and mothers could not hold back their happiness as they hugged their children.
Cindy Garn flew in from Ohio to see her 8-month-old grandson Reed and her daughter Lindsey.
"It's better than anything in the whole world," Garn said. "It's what the holidays are all about."
Molly Coyne arrived in from Florida. Her sister and best friend, Maria, lives half a country away in Minnesota.
"(It's) awesome because I don't always get the top of the escalator greeting," Molly Coyne said.
"Every time we get to come home it's special. We cherish it," said Maria Coyne.
And Cunningham who will ship out overseas next year, knows at least this time he'll be home for Christmas.
"It's going to be the best one yet," Cunningham said.
