Oregon inmates are working to make Christmas a little brighter for children in need.
This year, that includes kids in Connecticut, as well as children around Oregon.
For the past three years, men in the medium-security facility at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario have participated in a holiday project to provide stockings for children.
The inmates raise all the funds for the program and then sew the stockings themselves. Each one is filled with a stuffed animal.
Prison workers then take all the stockings to local agencies to be distributed to children. This year, they are going to the Department of Human Services and Saint Alphonsus Medical Center in Ontario.
A shipment was also made to children in Connecticut affected by the deadly school shooting.
In addition to making stockings, the inmates hosted a holiday luncheon for seniors. The Dec. 13 event took place in the minimum-security facility and provided meals to nearly 150 seniors. Carols were sung by prison workers and inmates.
The Snake River Correctional Institution houses more than 3,000 men. Prison workers said the point of the holiday projects is to show the inmates that they can still make a positive difference in society.
